The IHU ICAN is participating in a groundbreaking initiative to combat metabolic cardio-renal diseases

To mark the conclusion of the campaign to prevent cardiometabolic diseases, IHU ICAN announces the creation of a coalition, “Coalition CRM,” bringing together Boehringer Ingelheim, IHU ICAN, the Federation of Medical Biology, France Rein, the SOS Hepatitis and Liver Diseases Federation, Poids Plumes France, the Alliance du Cœur, the Institut Sapiens, and UNIPA, all united by a common goal: to transform the prevention and management of cardiometabolic and renal diseases (CRM).

The CRM Coalition: Serving Patients

Metabolic cardio-renal diseases (MCRD)—which include diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular, renal, and liver diseases—affect millions of French people today. Yet they remain largely underdiagnosed and are managed in a fragmented manner, even though they share a common pathophysiological continuum.

In the face of this major public health challenge, the group is building on three key breakthroughs:

Scientific advances in organ-organ interactions

The Development of Predictive Medicine Through Artificial Intelligence

The emergence of new therapeutic approaches that address multiple aspects of these diseases

“We are experiencing a paradigm shift. Our understanding of the interplay between the cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic systems is advancing rapidly, therapeutic solutions are available, and digital tools already allow us to track individual patient trajectories. Coalition CRM is here to demonstrate that we are ready to support this medical revolution and to actively integrate the healthcare system into it.”

Prof. Stéphane Hatem, Executive Director of the IHU ICAN

A diverse group working together to develop solutions

The CRM Coalition brings together complementary stakeholders whose diversity—spanning the scientific, institutional, and nonprofit sectors—forms the basis of its legitimacy:

  • A leading IHU in cardiometabolism: the IHU ICAN,
  • A medical biology federation: the Federation of Medical Biology,
  • 4 patient organizations representing those with kidney, heart, liver, and metabolic conditions: France Rein, La Fédération, SOS Hépatites et maladies du foie, Poids Plumes France, and L’Alliance du Cœur,
  • A union of healthcare professionals: UNIPA,
  • A think tank: the Sapiens Institute,
  • A pharmaceutical company committed to therapeutic innovation: Boehringer Ingelheim.

A scientific, technological, and therapeutic revolution

The CRM Coalition aims to offer tailored care pathways based on where patients enter the healthcare system, so that each individual’s situation is addressed holistically.

It will also work to develop appropriate funding models, in the form of flat-rate payments that take into account the complexity of cardiometabolic profiles, while ensuring their sustainability for public finances.

In the face of a large-scale epidemic driven by common risk factors (lifestyle, diet, sedentary habits, lack of physical activity, the environment, etc.), it is becoming necessary to promote personalized medicine, which is set to shape the organization of healthcare in the long term.
