General practitioners: Help with the early detection of metabolic liver diseases using GRIPonMASH!
Metabolism-related liver diseases often have no symptoms but can lead to serious complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer.
The GRIPonMASH project aims to improve early detection of the risk of these diseases in order to enable faster treatment and prevent the progression to severe complications.

A screening pathway for fatty liver disease designed for primary care physicians
As part of the GRIPonMASH project, general practitioners can refer patients who meet the study criteria to the hepatology teams at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital.
Inclusion criteria
Patients must meet the following criteria:
- written informed consent prior to any specific procedure (obtained during the hospital visit);
- aged 18 to 75;
- obesity (BMI > 30 or waist circumference > 80 cm for women / > 94 cm for men) or type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure or metabolic syndrome*;
- enrollment in the French social security system.
*Metabolic syndrome is defined as obesity combined with two of the following four factors:
- high fasting blood glucose (> 1.1 g/L);
- high blood pressure (>130/85 mmHg);
- low HDL-cholesterol levels (M < 0.4 g/L / F < 0.5 g/L);
- high triglyceride levels (> 1.5 g/L).
Exclusion criteria
Patients must not have:
- hepatitis B, C, HIV, or a known liver disease (hemochromatosis, sarcoidosis, Wilson’s disease, etc.);
- known liver fibrosis or cirrhosis;
- heavy alcohol consumption: > 3 units/day for men, > 2 units/day for women;
- a significant medical condition that would compromise the study.

How should I address a patient?
If the patient meets the criteria, please send an email to: griponmash.psl@aphp.fr
Including the following information:
- name;
- first name;
- date of birth;
- phone;
- email.
THE GRIPONMASH COURSE
The patient will be referred for an appointment with the hepatology department at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, which will include:
- Consent;
- Fibroscan;
- Tips.
The patient will then be referred back to their primary care physician for the remainder of the treatment and follow-up.
The GRIPoNMASH Project
GRIPonMASH is a consortium coordinated by the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht, Netherlands), with the clinical trial sponsored by Julius Clinical. It brings together 27 partners committed to a common goal: to fundamentally transform the screening and diagnosis of patients with MASH.
This four-year international project is funded by the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI), a public-private partnership jointly supported by the European Union—represented by the European Commission—and the life sciences industry, represented in particular by COCIR, EFPIA / Vaccines Europe, EuropaBio, and MedTech Europe.

GRIPonMASH aims to improve information, screening, diagnosis, and patient support—particularly regarding lifestyle—in order to promote earlier and more effective management of metabolic liver diseases. The project’s goal is to increase the number of people diagnosed and made aware of the necessary lifestyle changes, while reducing the number of patients who develop MASH or severe complications such as liver cancer.
