Clarivate’s “Highly Cited Researchers” ranking highlights researchers with strong global influence, with highly cited scientific publications over the past decade. It includes the top 1% most cited researchers worldwide.
We warmly congratulate Prof. Vlad Ratziu and Prof. Alain Combes, members of the IHU ICAN community, who are featured in the 2025 ranking!

Prof. Vlad Ratziu (Gastroenterology and Hepatology)
Prof. Ratziu’s main research areas include metabolic steatosis, a chronic liver condition whose global prevalence is increasing, as well as the molecular mechanisms, risk factors, and progression of liver fibrosis in liver diseases. He is also interested in optimizing drug therapies in hepatology. As part of his research, he coordinates or actively participates in numerous national and international clinical trials aimed at exploring new therapeutic approaches, particularly for metabolic steatohepatitis.
Professor Ratziu has published more than 400 articles in leading scientific journals (H-index 99), and his expertise is widely recognized worldwide.
- Active collaboration on several international research projects by coordinating the European consortium Fatty Liver Inhibition of Progression (FLIP), a program funded by the European Union under the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP7), which studies the mechanisms of progression of steatotic liver diseases.
- Member of the Steering committee in several projects funded by Horizon 2020, including EPOS: Elucidating Pathways of Steatohepatitis, or by the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 (IMI2), including LITMUS: Testing Marker Utility in Steatohepatitis, which aim to better understand the biological processes underlying the progression of metabolic steatosis and to identify new biomarkers for this disease.
- Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hepatology, the international hepatology journal with the highest impact factor (IF 26.8).
- Founding member and co-organizer of the annual international NASH-TAG conferences (NASH-Therapeutic Agents) and organizer of thematic conferences for EASL (European Association for the Study of Liver Diseases).
Prof. Alain Combes (Intensive Care Medicine)
Prof. Alain Combes’ research focuses on care for critically ill cardiac patients, mechanical circulatory support and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, rescue therapies for severe respiratory failure, and infections in critically ill patients.
Prof. Combes is a member of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), the American Thoracic Society (ATS), the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the Association for Acute Cardiovascular Care (ESC-ACVC), where he sits on the board, the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), where he is the former president of EURO-ELSO, the international ECMO network (ECMONet), and the French-Language Society of Intensive Care (SRLF).
Prof. Combes is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the journal Intensive Care Medicine.
