The impact of obesity, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease (CVD) on public health requires an integrated and translational approach ranging from basic research to clinical research and treatments. The objective of the IHU ICAN is to develop integrated strategies to improve prevention and promote personalized medicine based on the identification of preclinical molecular events, the predictors of treatment responses and innovative diagnostic tools and therapies.

New and growing knowledge in the field of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) requires training new generations of doctors and researchers.

The new integrated approach to translational research and personalized medicine in MDCs must be disseminated to professionals in the field. The development of large-scale omics tools (genomics, metagenomics, metabolomics lipidomics, etc.) is accompanied by the accumulation of massive data that must be analyzed and processed by applying systems biological approaches to discover the biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of CMD. The major role played by the intestinal microbiota in health and disease, and in particular metabolic diseases, requires teaching new skills in genomics, microbiology and systems biology. The practice of molecular clinic and phenotyping must be provided to open up new fields of investigation in clinical research.

Polytech Sorbonne collaboration

ICAN works with engineering students from POLYTECH Sorbonne and Master 1 SESI as part of their second semester internship project, the objective of which is to offer answers to the medical challenges encountered by clinicians in the ICAN community. in their daily practice. This collaborative work puts the scientific and clinical expertise of ICAN and the expertise of engineering students at the service of the patient in order to improve their quality of life. These projects, punctuated by the school calendar, are very stimulating for the students who work on very concrete devices that will perhaps change the lives of patients.

International cooperation

Since 2014, ICAN has established strong links with the Quebec Network for Research on Cardiometabolic Health, Diabetes and Obesity (CMDO) with the objective of creating a strategic and lasting partnership between France and Quebec on training research in the area of cardiometabolic health, diabetes and obesity. This transatlantic program allows young research professionals from the IHU-ICAN and all the universities of Quebec on Canadian soil to work together each year.

These inter-university meetings stimulate collaboration between transatlantic laboratories. Meetings at scientific congresses (ICAN series and CMDO scientific meetings) increase the influence and scope of everyone’s work and stimulate collaboration

LUCIEN JUNIOR BERGERON, PHD

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE CMDO NETWORK

“Since 2014, the CMDO community has had the privilege of welcoming the next generation of scientists from France (ICAN) during a student exchange that goes far beyond the transfer of knowledge. During the activities surrounding the winter camp, a flagship activity of our network, friendships are created, leading for some to sustained scientific collaborations and having an incredible leverage effect for CMDO research internationally. This French-speaking Quebec week is often a milestone for our campers, whether they are from France or Quebec, combining a cultural experience with a first-rate multidisciplinary scientific immersion. Long live this student exchange for the benefit of international research at the CMDO. »

CMDO/ICAN 2022 Summer Camp

For the very first time, the IHU ICAN is organizing a summer camp for doctoral students and postdocs in its ecosystem, to talk about their professional future. Whether you are destined for public or private research, or whether you simply want to enhance your PhD in a new professional environment, this camp is made for you.

Seminars and conferences

Promoting the increase of knowledge and skills of young researchers in the field of cardiometabolic and nutritional diseases in a national but also international context is a priority for ICAN. Indeed, confronting their ideas and their results with international experts as well as sharing their experience and their expectations with other researchers is a key experience for researchers.

Also, the ICAN organizes in collaboration with UMR 1166 monthly seminars and conferences with internationally renowned experts.
