The MET-INF-T2D project: Metabolic inflexibility of the heart as a predictor of heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes

Background

  • In France, nearly 4 million people take medication for diabetes. Nearly 8.5% of the world's population is affected by this disease, which is the leading cause of blindness worldwide and represents an increased risk of cardiovascular accidents.
  • Heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with a significant risk of death, recurrent hospitalizations, and deterioration in quality of life.
  • It is therefore important to recognize patients with T2DM and undiagnosed myocardial dysfunction who are at high risk of acute HF decompensation.
  • Lowering glucose levels in T2D causes major metabolic changes and requires metabolic adaptation of tissues. It is unclear how cardiac metabolism may be acutely affected by changes in blood glucose levels.
  • The objective of our research is to demonstrate that cardiac metabolic inflexibility is present in certain patients with chronic hyperglycemia and is revealed during treatment of their diabetes with insulin therapy.

Project objectives

  • Identify biomarkers for early detection of metabolic heart failure associated with type 2 diabetes.
  • Improving the prediction of type 2 diabetes progression through imaging.

  • This study will improve the care of patients with T2D by enabling earlier management of their heart failure.
